PlayStation 3 Launch

With hundreds waiting in line-some as long as two days outside of a Sony complex in downtown San Francisco, Sony Corp. (SNE) launched it's PlayStation 3 video game machine Thursday for North American customers amid concerns that there would be a shortage of the system over the crucial holiday shopping season.
Approximately 750 people lined up outside the Sony Metreon, an entertainment complex used by Sony to show off its products, to be among the first in North America to purchase the new system.
Such indications of initial demand for the product are important for Sony, which is looking for the newest version of its popular PlayStation line to boost revenue and profits over the next five years.
"We're rushing product here," said Peter Dille, executive vice president of marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment. "We know there is huge demand."
Sony had originally allocated about 500 of the new consoles for the launch event here, but flew in more to meet demand. Sony is hoping to ship one million PlayStation 3 units by Dec. 31, according to Dille.
The PlayStation 3 comes in two versions - one with a 60 gigabyte hard drive that sells for $599 and one with a 20 gigabyte hard drive that sells for $499.
